From great personalities such as Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, Lord Buddha, Confucius, Socrates, Plato, Shakespeare and even the likes of Christ and Muhammad there have been others who have inspired others with their life and times. The history of each culture has also it share of individuals who in some way or the other have made a difference in the way they lived their lives. Some may be remembered for their contributions to science; invention; excellence; mastery over nature; military conquest; music; literature; philosophy and religion while some may be remembered for their own exceptional qualities such as peace-lovingness or even heroism. Islam, the religion of Muhammad is over 1400 years old. It is one of the youngest religions in this world which has played a highly significant role in the development of several nations. Over time, Islam has profoundly impacted societies worldwide; greatly influencing their culture, economic structures, legal system, political stability and much more. Today, Islam is considered one of the major forces in various parts of the world. This article explores the historical background to the beginnings and spread of Islam to its present state in various parts of the world (Osman). Mohammed's life was based on prayer and devotion; his essence can be summarized in two statements he made - "I am God's slave" and "I am God's messenger". Muhammad's teachings are contained in the Quran, which he claimed to be dictated to him by the angel Gabriel. The Quran has influenced various cultures to different degrees, but it is historically understood that this book was written by Muhammad to unite mankind; although it is said that the codification of the laws (sharia) was not completed until later (Osman). The Arabic language, whose grammar and words were developed for the Quran, was spread around the world especially in Europe. The aid given by European scholars helped spread Arabic language and culture there. For centuries Muslim communities emerged wherever Muslims migrated with their particular customs and traditions which many who visited them were able to adapt into their own environments. Muslims were able to influence many areas in a substantial way. Muslims have a unique heritage in science, medicine, literature and art. Muslims have also brought a good deal of creativity in the fields of architecture, maths and engineering. The western world has been greatly influenced by Muslim achievements in these fields. In time Muslims have established flourishing Islamic civilizations in many countries such as Africa, West Asia, Central Asia and South East Asia.
